Community Building Rotation #3: Humes Hall

What's up, y'all?

It's been quite a long time since I posted, but I'm excited to be back up and running for the spring semester, and I hope you all are, too!

I started my community building rotations this semester by attending Knit Night, hosted by the wonderful Molly Kate Benson of Humes Hall.

Fun fact: I asked for a "learn how to knit" kit for Christmas last year, but never made it past the casting on phase. My "knit stitches," which should be loops, turned in to the weirdest shaped knots I've ever seen. So, believe me when I say that Molly Kate is a great teacher! I had knitted a square about the size of a pot holder by the time I left!

The idea behind this community builder is to bring residents together residents through an activity that they might not normally take up--in this case, knitting. Molly Kate has some knitting residents on her floor, but many that are just as new to the craft as I am, or even newer! The knit night is also a great forum for resident interaction and discussion, and this is where I think Molly Kate takes the CB above and beyond. Being a Women's Studies major, she plans to take this night (I forgot to mention, this is a weekly event) to discuss issues that might be at the forefront of her residents' minds, or to call attention to issues that may be very far away from her residents' minds, but important nonetheless. The night I attended was an introduction/teaching night, so there wasn't a specific issue on the docket for discussion. However, just at the mention of these issues for future nights, residents began their own discussion and information sharing session. "Did you know that...?"   "I read that..." "I learned that..." What a promising start to this weekly CB!

Great job, Molly Kate!

{I was so in to my knitting that I forgot to take pictures. Please accept my sincerest apologies.}
